Why Wood Needs a Different Approach

Concrete can take 3,000 PSI without complaint. Wood cannot. Hit a cedar fence or a pine deck board with full pressure and you get furring — the soft summer growth between the harder grain lines tears away, leaving a fuzzy, splintered surface that feels rough underfoot and holds dirt worse than it did before.

Worse, once wood is furred, the damage is permanent short of sanding the entire deck. It is one of the most common ways a well-intentioned weekend project or a rushed contractor causes lasting damage.

We clean wood the way it should be cleaned: a wood-safe cleaning solution applied first to break down algae, mildew and the grey oxidized layer, given time to work, then rinsed at low pressure. The growth comes off. The grain stays intact.

Planning to Stain or Seal?

Tell us up front, because it changes how we approach the job. Stain and sealant will not bond properly to a surface still carrying mildew spores or an oxidized grey layer, and any coating applied over that will fail early — peeling and flaking within a season or two.

A proper cleaning is the prep step for staining, not an optional extra. We will also let you know how long to let the wood dry before you or your painter applies anything — typically 48 to 72 hours in our climate, longer if humidity stays high.

When to Clean Your Deck in Texas
